Tornados and Sprained Ankles

A year ago, my daughter, her roommate, and I drove to Joplin, Missouri to help with the clean up after the tornado.  We made a spur-of-the-moment decision Saturday night and left early Sunday morning.  As we drove into town later that morning, we started looking for tornado damage, but didn’t see anything at first.  All of a sudden, there it was.  As far as we could see in both directions, east and west, and a good mile wide was devastation.  It was like a war zone.  Houses and stores were leveled to the ground.  Trees, if they were still standing were stripped bare of all leaves and bark. 
There was definitely work to be done and we had arrived to pitch in!  We pulled in at Mt. Hope Church of Christ just as services were ending.  This congregation had responded immediately after the tornado as a relief headquarters.  The halls of the church building were lined with clothes of all sizes and diapers, toiletries, and paper goods.  In another part of the building, they were collecting food.  Dozens of people had already arrived to help and were “camping” out in the classrooms of the building.  There were work crews that had been going out daily following the tornado.  It was a very impressive operation. 
We asked to be assigned to a work crew, joined our group, and headed to a neighborhood to clean up tree limbs and other debris.  It wasn’t 30 minutes that we had been cleaning, when I carried an armful of branches from the backyard of a house to a big pile in the front yard.  I stepped up on a section of a tree stump so I could throw my branches on top of the pile.  I turned to hop off of the stump, leading with my right foot.  Instead of landing flat on the ground, my foot hit a stick and I turned my ankle, which caused it to contort at what I’m sure was a 90 degree angle.  Have you ever seen blackness and stars in the middle of the day?  That’s what I saw as I fell to the ground, in pain that I have never felt before. 
The first thought to fly through my head was, “I hope no one saw me,” followed quickly with the realization that I was going to miss the triathlon I had planned on doing the following weekend.  In a matter of milliseconds my third thought was, “What the heck?!  I drove all the way to Joplin to help and won’t be able to do a darn thing!” 
Tornados and sprained ankles.  Sometimes life just stops you in your tracks.  I have given this idea a great deal of thought this past year.  My injured ankle was a mere inconvenience compared to the life changes experienced by the people of Joplin.  Yet it stopped me in my tracks literally for awhile, and has continued to affect my activity even a year later. 
After I fell, my daughter and her roommate, both of whom had just graduated the month before with nursing degrees, came to my rescue.  They got ice for me and brought the van to pick me up.  We drove slowly around tornado-torn Joplin in disbelief at the destruction, discussing whether we should drive on home because of my ankle or stay the two nights as planned.  I wanted to stay at least for one night, hoping my ankle wasn’t too bad, although it was swelling up like a tennis ball.  As we drove down one street, where windowless houses stood, we spotted a pair of crutches leaning against a tree.  We assumed that they were left for someone who needed them, and we decided that would be me. 
We drove through another neighborhood full of roofless houses, constantly amazed at what we saw.  In one house, most of the walls still stood, but the roof was gone as was the furniture, except for a bookcase full of books sitting undisturbed.  In an apartment complex, the front wall had been torn off revealing the rooms like the inside of a doll house.  One bedroom had been emptied of its contents but in the closet, clothes still hung neatly on their hangers.  
Such bizarre force a tornado boasts.  In its rudeness, it leaves little time for adjusting plans.  You stop what you are doing and leave your possessions to find a safe place or you take the chance of falling victim to its fury.  Thousands of people in Joplin were stopped in their tracks that day.  Some, forever. 
Why?  Why do these things happen?  Why did I go to Joplin on Memorial Day weekend to serve and wind up helpless from a sprained ankle?  Why did so many people lose loved ones and everything they owned?  It seems many questions are not meant to be answered, at least in this life. 
Maybe when we are stopped in our tracks, if nothing else makes sense, we should take time to be quiet and listen.  Sometimes the normal noise of life makes it hard to hear God, and we don’t always stop and tune in to what he has to say.  In the book of I Kings, the prophet Elijah endured some strong earthly forces in order to experience God.  The Lord told him to stand on the mountain because he was about to pass by.  A great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart, but the Lord was not in the wind.  An earthquake followed, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.  Then came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.  Finally, there was a gentle whisper, and from that came the voice of the Lord. 
As long as we’re alive, questions will abound.  Heartaches will persist.  Illness and injury will always be unwelcome intruders.  Yet in the stillness that follows the devastation, we may not understand fully what has happened, but…we can hope to hear the gentle voice of God.

Am I Dreaming?

You probably heard about the death of snowboarder and Olympic favorite, Sarah Burke. She died last week from a head injury after a fall while doing some flips in the air. Her friend and professional snowboarder, Gretchen Blielier, responded to the public by saying, “Keep waking up early to land those tricks you’ve been dreaming of, but only if it’s done with 100% passion, pure fire, discipline and commitment.”

That struck a chord with me. That’s why Sarah and Gretchen were champion snowboarders. It was more than a hobby to them. They dreamed about it. They lived it wholeheartedly. And Sarah Burke risked everything for her dream.

This has spurred me to ask myself some questions. I encourage you to ask them of yourself as well. What do I wake up early to do? What fills my waking hours? What do I dream about? What do I envision myself doing? Who do I envision myself becoming? What holds me back from my dream? Is it lack of passion? Lack of discipline? Lack of commitment? Is my vision coming true or is it fading like a nighttime dream upon awakening? Finally, what would others say I am passionate about?

I love to run. I think about it. I read about it. I talk about it. I set goals for my running. I even envision myself running certain races and setting a personal best. I would say I am passionate about running. It is a part of who I am.

I also love God. I think about him. I read about him. But do I talk about him with the same exuberance and openness with which I talk about running? Do I daydream about and put into action ways to know him better? Am I passionate about the One who loves me passionately? Does my relationship with God define me, or do I methodically check off a religious to-do list so I can focus on other things I am truly passionate about?

I am inspired when I see or hear about others who are passionate about a sport or a cause. Their devotion is especially apparent when they risk losing their lives to fulfill their dream.

For me, dying while running is a much better option than a lot of other ways to die. But what about giving it all for God? Do I give him my all, even if it means losing my life for him? What about looking like a radical? Do I wake up eager to spend time with him? Do I pursue him with 100% passion, pure fire, discipline and commitment?

On the Road Again!

Today was almost three months to the day that I hadn't run due to a stubborn case of plantar fasciitis. Not only have I abstained from running, I have stretched the fascia, rolled my foot on a golf ball, worn KTtape, taken anti-inflammatories, even gotten a steroid injection. The thing that seemed to really help, or maybe it was the missing ingredient to the mix, was the Strassburg sock, loaned to me by a friend. You wear it at night, and it keeps the ankle at a 90 degree angle with the toes bent slightly toward the shin, which prevents the fascia from contracting and then re-tearing the next morning when you step out of bed. Wearing it is a bit awkward, but it works!

But today was the day! I've had it written on my calendar for a few weeks. Finally, I ventured out this afternoon and ran a whole...mile and a half! It was short but oh, so sweet! I wanted to run farther but have been following doctor's orders, so am easing into it. It occured to me while running, that my past three months of working out (cycling, swimming, ellyptical) minus the running, have seemed much like a BLT sandwich...minus the bacon. Something very important has been missing, and I am so grateful to be adding it back into my life.

It felt good to get out on the open road and let my feet feel the pavement again. The air was chilly and the sky was gray, but I was running and it was wonderful. I actually did a little happy dance. Kind of like the one that Tevya did on Fiddler on the Roof. No, really...I did.

I was thinking about the fact that I am a runner. It's not just something I do, it's something I am. I could live without it, but sure don't want to. I would feel a huge loss if I could never run again. Just three months off was tough, and that was with the expectation of running in the near future. I want to appreciate even more, my ability to run; to be active. So many people don't have that privilege. In fact, I want to be more mindful of all the blessings I have, and instead of taking them for granted, I intend to be more grateful!

Getting Back on Track

Almost a year has passed since my last post. I didn't even remember my password for logging on! I am recommitting to blogging; one, because I love to write and two, because it is good discipline for me.

When I last wrote, I was discouraged about not being able to run or do much of anything else, because low iron was keeping me in a state of fatigue. I am happy to say that I finally found an iron product that works! I tried many over the course of several years, and the one that made a difference is Nature's Plus Hema-Plex in gel cap form. As a female athlete, my ferritin should be in the 25-50 range yet had hovered around 5-7 for several years. Last time I checked, about six months ago, it was 19! And I could tell the difference. (No, I'm not getting paid for that commercial.)

So, I am a happy runner now, right? Wrong. I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis for a good five months. In fact, when it first started, I ignored it and ran all summer thinking it would go away. Instead, my heel became very angry and unforgiving. I am doing penance now.

My running has been on hold for almost three months, and it has been a lesson in patience! I hope to start running in about two weeks, as I am closely following doctor's orders. In the meantime, I have been doing spin class and water jogging to stay somewhat conditioned. The holidays, busy schedule and runner's blues (what I get when I can't run) has threatened to rob me of the fitness I had attained through the summer.

I am determined to hold my ground though and move forward. I hope you too, have a plan and motivation to get in shape or stay in shape. The mental benefits are almost as good as the physical. Share your plan with someone, for accountability, and keep a journal to record your progress. And whether or not you will set racing as one of your goals, keep in mind that this life is a type of race, or at least a journey, and its good to find the pace that works for you.

As far as running, not much to say. The past two weeks have kicked my booty and training has taken a back seat. I have a physical issue that is truly an issue (some of you women will know what I'm referring to) and it sets me back on an occasional month or sometimes...year. I am working on remedying the problem and in the meantime will swim and cycle and suck wind until my iron increases. The other day I told my son, Elijah, who is a runner, that I was going to have to quit my training for the half-marathon. He said, "You don't have to quit yet, Momma, just do what you can and wait and see." So, inspired by a 16 year old, who is an old soul, I will do just that.

I have a greater respect now for people who train for a long race and work full-time. I work part-time, but have worked all day the past two and have already been challenged to find the time to run. Tomorrow will be my third full day in a row to work this week, and I will have to wedge a run in between work and the evening commitments I have.

With that said, I did run on Monday, and it was a most wonderful day for running! The temp was upper 40's, no wind and mostly sunny with a few clouds that looked like feathers left behind by an immense bird. I ran to Avalon and Bebo serenading me with inspiring songs. (Was thinking, among other things, about this: You have two headphones, one in each ear, on either side of your head, but the music is playing fully and evenly inside your head. Not a little on this side and a little on that side. You don't hear it as sound tumbling down a little tube into the center of your head. It's just all God understands what I'm trying to say.)

I ran 3.5 miles and felt great! It was an encouraging end to my "weekend" which extended into Monday. On Sunday afternoon, I was privileged to stay the night at a monastery or spirituality center, which it's now called. I've been before and was long overdue for another stay. My waking hours there were spent reading, journaling and praying. I could've easily stayed another day...or several, but I was there just long enough to let the din of my busy life quiet just a bit. I would've loved another day or two to really savor the solitude. But, I'll take what I can get! It was wonderful! If you long to get centered, I highly recommend an individual spiritual "retreat."

As I write, I realize that the next best place of solitude for me is when I run. I typically run out on the rural roads by our house, where there is a lot of open space and cars are few. I often get lost in my thoughts or music or prayer. I do some of my clearest thinking and have my most inspiring thoughts while running. It's no wonder when I don't run regularly that I tend to get grumpy. So I guess I'm recommending running too, as an option for a mini-spiritual retreat.

Three miles!

Today was another beautiful day for a run! The temp warmed to the 40's with some wind out of the south. At least not the frigid north wind like Tuesday! I had planned to run three miles
this Saturday, but I was feeling it today, so three it was! I felt great! I thank God I am healthy enough to run. Such a blessing.

I was running slow, if you could even call it running, but I plan to work on speed a little down the road. "Down the road." Get it? Okay, let's stay on track here. Ha! On "track!" Anyway....

Winter scenery in Oklahoma leaves much to be desired aesthetically. At least in my part of Oklahoma. The trees are bare, and everything else that used to be green is the color of straw. Drab is the word that comes to mind. Unless, of course, like today, the sun is a brilliant blue and the sun is shining bright. That makes it all okay.

As I was running today and thinking about the things I just described, I realized that signs of spring will be here in two months! It put a "spring" in my step just thinking about it. I love springtime when everything wakes up and bursts with color. I realized that I can tolerate and even enjoy the gray Oklahoma winter when I know that spring is coming! I wonder how much it would affect my spiritual outlook if I saw my hardships that way; believing that the unpleasant won't last forever and new life will emerge if I just hold out for the changing of the season.
